EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting was held on Friday last. Present: Crs. Maxwell (in the chair), Hurst, Farquhar, Young, Macßeynolds, Harvey, Willcox. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Resolved that the Parihaka Roatt Board be asked if their foreman may undertake the preparing of plans ana supervision of Government grants at n cost not exceeding five per cent, and that it be an instruction to the clerk that as soon as the specifications are agreed to by the Department, tenders be called for the work. DEPUTATION.
I Mr. McKeown waited on the council in reference to the Honi road, and asked the council to spend the whole of the credit accruing to the road. If the council would grant his request, he would guarantee that they would not be required to spend any more money on Honi road for the next three years, or not until this (Egmont) council was wiped out. The new local Government Bill would do it He was exceedingly sorry that the rich Oeo ratepayers diet not have a representative at the council table.—The foreman's report in reference to Honi road requirements had been dealt with before Mr. McKeown waited on the council.
METAL. Cr. Willcox stated that as the contract for metal was for river boulders it should be adhered to, as the pit metal would be required for patching and repairing.—Resolved that the foreman be notified to have river boulder stones crushed as stated in specilications. RAIIOTU SOUTHERN RIDING. Foreman T. Humphries reported: During the month I have been generally repairing Eltham road, also Main South road between Waiaua and Taungatara rivers, and between Oaonui and Te Namu rivers. A. C. Vincent has completed the whole of his contracts; would recommend a final payment on contract No. 176 and No. 178, a progress payment on contract No. 177 of 75 per cent, on 702 yards of boulder stone, crushed and delivered. On this contract I got permission from the chairman and Cr. Young to get another 100 yards of boulder stone crushed. I found I was a bit short to connect the new piece of road laid down last year. It requires about 800 yards of pit metal for blinding. A. C. Vincent has completed the blinding on Eltham and Main South roads.
The action of the chairman and Or. Young in authorising 100 yards ol metal to be put on was endorsed.
RAHOTU NORTHERN RIDING. Foreman Newport reported:—During the month I have been repairing the Main South road between Oaonui and Puniho. We have also cleaned outlets and inlets to some of the worst culverts north of Pungarehu. I have received bridge decking for repairing Warea and Waiweranui bridges, and 1 should like to get some more timber for repairs to a small bridge south of Manihi road.
GENERAL. The clerk said he had a telephone message from Mr. Vincent stating that he had to undergo an operation, and asked if the council was willing to let Foreman Humphries take charge of his contracts during his absence. —The council could not entertain the proposal, members being of opinion it would create a very peculiar position. Messrs. T. Humphries (foreman) and A. L. Collins (engine driver) wrote: We wish to state the facts re the intentional sticking up of the contracting work. Mr. Vincent asked us to work the extra hour on the Saturday in question. We did so readily, the question of payment to be brought before the council at the following meeting by the contractor. The specifications state the work to commence on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and to cease at 4 p.m. Authority was given to use the crusher for rolling newly laid down metal in the Rahotu riding. Tenders were accepted: Rahotu North (pit metal for blinding), A. G. Vincent, Is lly 2 d. Dog collars: McGregor's lender of oy a d.
