DISTRICT NEWS

EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) All the fanners here are cngnged in that necessary occupation of "making hay while the sun shines," and hayforks and their wielders have been at a premium for some time. The weather has fortunately been fairly settled and fine, and little or no hay has been spoiled. With their hands so full, the farmers have little time to think of entertainments of any sort, and nothing in that line has been held since the school concert. The Sunday School picnic and concert will be held on Thursday, and will be welcomed as an oasis in the desert of work. A picnic anS tea will be held m the afternoon, and a concert, followed by a supper, in the evening. We understand that the management is arranging tlie excellent programme for which this gathering is noted, and a packed house is confidently expected.

The school committee meeting was held on Monday night, when the° usual routine business was transacted. The turnip crops are looking very well just now, and there, is no sign of blight, which was so destructive last season. Mangolds and kol rabbi have been tried this year by many of the farmers, and m nil cases are doing well. Shearing is practically over, and in most cases heavy clips are recorded.

The local cricket team is finding some difficulty in getting a team together for the matches it has vet to play. Players cannot sacrifice work to cricket, mid while the fine weather lasts everyone will be on the go from daylight to dark. I understand Mrs. J. N.' Magee is giv-1 ing up the telephone office here, as "she finds it too much of a tie. There is some prospect of Mr. K. Burrows taking it over.
