SPORTING

METROPOLITAN COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Taranaki Metropolitan Committee was held last evening, when there were present:—Messrs C. M. Lepper, 0. W. Sole, W. C. Weston, A. L. Thomson, L. B. Webster, J. H. Ilempton, F. Orbell, and Colonel Ellis. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs. A. L. Blundell, A. Standish, L. A. Nolan, and A. Alexander. The programme for the meeting of the Patea Racing Club was approved, and that part of the Opunake Racing Club's programme coming under the rules of racing was also approved. Trainers' licenses were granted to Thomas Pine and William McElinain. Under the exceptional circumstances attending the incident, the fine of £2 imposed upon Jockey W. T. Ayre at the summer meeting of the Taranaki JocEey Club was remitted. The request of the Stratford Racing Club that gentlemen riders' fees be remi ted as usual was acceded to. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. At a meeting of the club held subsequently, the same gentlemen were present. Mr. W. Birdling was thanked by resolution for his report on the ploughing of the course proper. The action of the course committee in repairing Avenue road fence, and in removing picket fence down the straight (substituting post and top rail) was confirmed. The secretary was instructed to write to the Feilding Jockey Club for particulars of the new tea kiosk. Mr. R. H. Pigott was appointed judge for the February meeting of the club, and the chairman and secretary were instructed to arrange for music and the sale of race-books. It was decided to 'purchase" a band tent to be erected over the rotunda. for the use of the band, and also to make alterations to the fence on the north boundary of the lawn, substituting a picket and wire fence for the present one. Fife, now members were elected. Accounts amounting to £213 17s fid were passed for payment. Nominations for all events at the Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting close with the secretary, Mr. E. P. Webster, box 33, New Plymouth, at nine o'clock on Monday night.
