FLOODS IN VICTORIA
GREAT DAMAGE AMONGST STOCK. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, January 17. Floods in Bairnsdale district destroyed a large area of crops. The damage is estimated at £IO,OOO. The Avon river at Stratford is in high flood, and the ..lowlands submerged. Many sheep have been drowned, and hund eds are cooped on small islands. If there is a further rise they will be lost.
The Long Tunnel mine shaft is flooded, causing serious damage. SHOPS' AND STREETS FLOODED. Received 18, 12.35 a.m. Melbourne, January 17. Further heavy rain has fallen. Many Melbourne shops were flooded, and street traffic was impeded. A serious landslide occurred on the Walhalla railway line.
