DISTRICT NEWS

[ WAREA. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Messrs Ducker Bros., our local sawmills have invested in a new and up-to-date motor car. This year several addition? have been made to the Horticultural Society's catalogue, and a largo number of special prizes have been donated. The milk supply at the local factory is decreasing considerably. Still the factory is turning out two chee-es more now than at the highest period of last season, besides which each cheese is larger this year than last.

OPUNAKE. (Prom Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of tlic Opunake branch of the Xew Zealand Farmers Union was held ou January 7, when there were a dozen members present Mr. C. J. ltcakes wrote regretting his inability to attend immediately, but would do so as soon as convenient. The New Zealand Drug Co. wrote stating that they heard that the fanners ot the district would next season be procuring about 100 tons of manure direct from Home, and intimating that they were in a position to supply a better and cheaper article owing to the facilities they possessed of shipping direct to Opunake.—Owing to the lateness of the season there is no probability of the Union taking action at present, but on some future occasion the letter may receive consideration. Five new members were elected. The president (Mr. Jackson) explained that it was rumoured that the Union, by having their annual picnic next Wednesday, were acting against the Seaside Improvement Society. Such a contention was absurd. The object, while bringing the country people together, was to show that the farmers of the district were willing to work with the townspeople for any movement towards the advancement of the town and district. An animated discussion took place on Mr. Forsyth's recent contribution to the local Press on socialism. Practically every member present took part therein, and the outcome was an offer, which was accepted, on the part of the secretary, to give at the next meeting a paper ) on co-operation and the bacon industry. | A suggestion was also made that on some future occasion a debate take place 011 freehold versus leasehold.
