i THE ROSAMOND. The Rosamond arrived from Onehunga r on Saturday afternoon and sailed for [ Wellington later with a cargo of cheese, I which is to be transhipped to the Nairnshire, for the West of England. AN EXCITING EXPERIENCE.
One of the most exciting experiences is related by the crew of the fishing schooner Golden West, which came into San Diego from Lower California water. They say it was only by a miracle that the schooner was root sent to the bottom of the ocean by a school of seventy-five whales. When about twenty miles below San Diego the look-out of the Golden West called Captain Massa's attention to an unusual commotion •in the sea dead ahead. Later large columns of water were shooting skyward, and on coming close to the spot a big school of whales was found disporting in the water. Captain Massa headed the Golden West toward the shore to avoid collision. Several times the whales came so close to the schooner that when they spouted the water fell on the decks. For more than six hours the whales remained close to the schooner, and Captain Massa had difficulty in making the entrance to the harbor. OVERSEAS VESSELS TO ARRIVE IN WELLINGTON.
