NEW ZEALAND SCORES
MAIL FROM CANADA DIRECT. THE COMMONWEALTH EXCLUDED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 15, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, January 15. Mr. Fisher, -Federal Premier, has received a cablegram from Canada regretting that the Commonwealth declines to permit the New Zealand call. The Government of Canada has therefore decided to enter into a contract with Sir James Mills (general manager of the Union B.S. Co.) for five years for a service between Canada and New Zealand. Mr. Usher said: "They put the matter in an aggressive way. We said we could not agree to the proposal, because it would mean subsidising another country." BUR JAMES MILLS INTERVIEWED. AUSTRALIA ASKED TO JOIN IN. Beceived 16, 1 a.m. Sydney, January 16. Sir James Mills is a passenger by .the tJlimaroa. Interviewed by wireless last night, he stated that the information regarding tihe Canadian contract was correct. After July 31i, when the present contract expires, the steamers will call at Auckland. It is hoped that Australia will join in the contract as soon as a reciprocal tariff bas> been arranged between Canada and Australia; so, pending negotiations in that direction, it is intended to continue with Sydney as a terminal port of the line.
ONE WAY OUT OF THE DIFFICULTY. BUT NOT CANADA'S WAY. Sydney, January 14. The Herald publishes an interview with a prominent shipping man, who suggests that the I)est way to overcome the Vancouver mail deadlock is by cutting out both Auckland and Brisbane. Brisbane mails and passengers could come to Sydney, and the service could connect with Auckland by a special service to Suva. He says that the Auckland-Suva service connects with the outgoing mail, but returning passengers either wait at Suva ten days or come on to Sydney. The service would not be a real mail ii it went zig-zag all over the Pacific to suit local interests.
