A VISIT OF INSPECTION'. Ijßst week a visit of inspection to the Stratford-Ongarue road •:!>! ".:':! works was paid by Mr. W. It. iri^n-,.. |..:jineer-in-Chief of the Public Work-, Department, accompanied by Mr. McKenzic (local Public Works Engineer) and Mr. Murrav (Koads Engineer f.u- the dUlrictl, «ivs the Stratford Post. The party penetrated as far as the Tangarakau Gorge, sixty-si:-; and a-lialf miles from .Stratford. They drove to the 58-mile peg, and thence proceeded on horseback. The road had been made to its full widtii up to within nine miles of the Gorge, after which'point it is still merely a bridal truck. The scenery in the gorge is described 1 as very fine. A start has been made with the lining of the tunnel on the railway line just beyond Pohokura, three lengths having been finished. In this tunnel there is only nine chains of 'heading to be done. The rails have now been laid for thirtyfour miles, and formation work is in progress up to thirty-six miles. The site for the station yard at Whamsunomona has been fisixl on the far side of the township. The Engineer-in-Cliief came up on a, visit of general inspection, but lie directed special attention to the problem of putting the road and railway through the Tansarakau Gorge, 'without them fouling each other, which problem promises to be exceedingly hard of solution. The party left Stratford on Monday and returned on Thursday, putting in a fairly strenuous time in the saddh- during the trip. Mr. Holmes returned to Wellington by Fri.-lav's mail train.
