NUMBERING THE PEOPLE.
Preliminary work for the census in April next is in hand, and it is expected that the appointment of the census enumerators will be announced within the next week or so. The enumerators win control the distribution and collection of the householders' schedules, which distribution will be done by sub-enumerators. About 50 census enumerators will be required, and approximately IiOOO sub-enumerators. The sub-enumerators will be selected for their knowledge of the districts which fcbey have to work. Some will be mounted men, others will be cyclists, and the balance will go on foot. The work of collecting the schedules in the four centres will be pusned tiirousr.li as speedily as possible on account of the continual movement of the population, and, in Wellington alone, some 50 or 00 collectors will be at work. Householders can assist by not only having their schedules rilled in when they arm called for, but (in cases where tiiey are moving) making arrangements whereby schedules can be picked up without trouble. It is interred to make the forthcoming census as complete and perfect as it is possible to get it. The electoral boundarbs are to be reon the result in time for the general election. In addition to the general census, it is proposed to take the agricultural statistics at the same time. This is a reversion to the. system which ' obtained previous to 1595.
