THE LOSS OF THE WARATAH
A MARINE SUPERINTENDENT'S EVIDENCE. THE COALING AT SYDNEY. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 12, 5.30 p.m. London, January 12. At the Waratah enquiry Captain Bidwell, Lund's Marine Superintendent, testified that after the first voyage the captain and officers eulogised the qualities of the Waratah, and made no complaint. Witness did not remember telling Lunds that the Waratah was less stable than the Geelong. Witness added that Captain llbery had treated the rumors which were the subject of conversation among Lund's clerks as idle talk. Admiral Davis quoted Chief Engineer Holder's letter, informing Mr. Shanks about the. coaling at Sydney, compelling the captain twice to stop coaling, because he was afraid of a possible list. The witness declared that Captain llbery told him nothing of this.
FURTHER CONDEMNATION. Received 12, 10.10 p.m. London, January 12. Captain Bid-well was unable to explain why the ballast tanks, which were full on the first voyage, were left empty on the second homeward trip to Durban. The depositions of Latimer, tally clerk at Sydney, giving the second officer's opinion that the Waratah had a deck too many, and the Sydney pilot's informing Captain llbery that, the vessel was tender, and that of Lusakin, a steward, that the boatswain had told him the lifeboats wwe the most awful he had ever seen, were read. Several witnesses who were passengers on the steamer Tottenham corroborated their previous evidence about bodies being seen. The third officer of the Tottenham said the captain enjoined silence on the matter, remarking that his owners would have a poor opinion of him if he bothered to pick up the bodies to convey them to the nearest port, when other wssels were specially searching for the Waratah. Saunders, a stowaway, gave evidence that the behaviour of the Waratah seared him. He believed she was bound to topple over 'in a squall. Several other witnesses certified that she was comfortable ship.
