GAOL RATHER THAN THE SEA. By Uelegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Wednesday. At the Police Court to-day five seamen from the steamer Kaipara, now in port, were charged with absenting themselves without leave. The chief officer of the Kaipara stated that the men walked ashore on Monday morning ana returned late in the afternoon, when they were arrested. One of the accused, Stcen, constituted himself the spokesman of the party, and said they wcro not satisfied with the food and general treatment received. Three of the men stated that they would prefer gaol to returning on board. Ilis Worship convicted accused, and sentenced them to three days' imprisonment, also to pay 7s costs each, and said the police would be instructed to put the moil on board prior to the vessel's departure.
FREEZING WORKS REPORT. Christehurch, Wednesday
The annual meeting of the British and New Zealand Meal Co. was held today. The report shows a balance to credit of profit and loss account ol £3594. The directors recommended a dividend of 8 per cent., absorbing £1705, the allocation of £li">o in reduction of debt on "Delrostcr' shares, the balance of £(139 to lie carried forward. The. chairman. Mr. W. C. Orliell, spoke optimistically of the future of the. meat industry, and incidentally expressed the opinion that a good market might he opened up in Canada.

The Maitai, which is leaving Wellington for 'Frisco, via Auckland, to-day, takes 3.100 boxes of butter for Vancouver and Victoria. British Columbia. TYPHOID FEVER. Dnrgaville. Wednesday. 1 An outbreak of typhoid fever at Scarrolts, a native settlement down the river, has resulted in five deaths in the past fortnight and five natives are sick at present. The health authorities are taking all necessary steps.
