AMUSEMENTS.

LAWRENCE CAMPBELL, ENTERTAINER. TO-NIGHT. Mr. Lawrence Campbell gives his two nights' recitals in the Theatre Royal to-night and to-morrow.

Mr. Lawrence Campbell possesses ; rare wealth of humorous sketches. Hi I is a veritable "laughter Icing,'' and fairh revels in showing up the light side o nature. "A day without a laugh is s: day lost," thus hearing Mr. Campbell h a "day of days." In one of his amusing . recitations, called ''School Examinations,' ; lie depicts most vividly the dilemma of a bishop at an examination on bein» asked 'how many legs a caterpillar had. In imitating coster life in London, reciting the fiery raciily-written ''How we beat the captain's colt," or the classics of Shakespeare, Dickens, and lesser lights like Kipling, he is equally effective, lie is a "host of hosts," and'is considered a specialist in musical monologues. Mrs. ShawMeyer, who is accompanying Mr. Campbell, is a splendid pianist, and has himself composed most of the music used in the monologues. M. Eugene Ossipoff's singing is being very much appreciated in New Zealand, and in Wellington and Palmereton he was recalled on every occasion. He has a voice of immense I power, which he uses, one might .say, with startling effect. However, as an exhibition of sonorous and vigorous melody it could not be excelled, as he has complete control over his voice and is able to modulate it to a most minute degree. His music lis characterised as much by beauty as by volume. Miss Renee Lees is a special accompanist to M. Ossipoff, who has a trained, sympathetic touch and understands the great baritone's fiery, impetuous and dramatic interpretations. The box plan is at Collier's and the prices are 3s, 2s and Is.

PLIMMER-DENNISTOX COMPANY. On Monday next, January 10, the Plim-mer-Denniston Co. will open their return season of two nights at the Theatre Royal with that popular play, "A Message from Mars." This company has just concluded a brilliant week's run with this piece in Auckland, playing to packed houses every performance, and although the play had been seen before in that city, this presentation was unanimously admitted by the Press and public to be the best yet seen both in the close attention to detail of the scenic and mechanical effects and the all-round excellence of the caste. On this occasion Mr. Harry Plimmer will be seen as Horace Parker and Mr. Reynolds Denniston as the messenger, while Miss Lizette Parkes will also be included in the caste as Minnie Templer.

On Tuesday, the 17th, "Lovers' Lane" will be revived for one night. It is owing to the great success of this delightful conwdy during the last visit that the management has decided to give the NewPlymouth theatre-going public another opportunity of witnessing it. Miss Lizette Parkes will again be Simplicity Johnson, and Mr. Harry Plimmer will once more appear as the Rev. Thos. Singfleton. The box plan for both pieces will open at Collier's to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock sharp.
