TRADE BRISK IN AUCKLAND.

"BUOYANT FINAXCES." Auckland, Monday. The Christmas and New Year trade bas been most gratifying to the tradespeople in Auckland. The most pleasingfeature about the season has been the widespread effect- of what Sir Joseph Ward would call the "buoyant state of the finances." The good times have not been confined to any one particular branch of business, and this is taken as one of the surest signs of the solidity of the. district. Of course the rush of business is over, and things are beginning to settle down into their ordinary routine,, but there is yet an unusually large number of visitors in town, tempted doubtless to prolong their stay by the glorious weather we have been enjoying, and their presence is still felt by the retailers in certain businesses, such as the jewellers, for instance. In the grocery trade business is somewhat brisker just now than it usually is in January, but whether this means a permanent improvement, or simply thai the holiday influx has not yet returned remains to he seen. The clofhing houses, and drapery establishments report a satisfactory amount of business, and, speaking generally, Queenstreet retailers are quite content with their prospects just now.
