A MISSIONARY DEPORTED
CHARGES AGAINST A METHODIST
By Cable—.Press Association—Copyright.
Sydney, January y.
It is reported that the Rev. Mr. Shackle, Methodist missionary at Ontong, Java, has been deported from the Solomon Islands by order of the resident commissioner. The alleged ground of this action is Mr. Shackle's desecration of a native temple, and Hogging natives.
A SEARCHING ENQUIRY TO BE MADE.
Received 9, 9 p.m. Sydney, January 9,
The Methodist Association . Board is sending Dr. George Brown, the veteran missionary, to the Solomons to enquire into the deportation of Mr. Shackle. He leaves on Friday. Dr. Brown states that Mr. Woodford, Resident Commissioner in the Solomons, wrote to the Mission Board intimating that Shackle, who is a young probationary missionary, had done some very foolish things, compelling his removal, but the board had heard nothing about the alleged flogging of natives, and Dr. Brown was disinclined to believe the allegation of flogging and also the statements made by island traders that some Methodist missionaries were engaged in trading. A most searching enquiry would be made by the board regarding the matter, which is regarded as serious.
