DISTRICT NEWS.
KAIMATA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The residence that is being erected by Mr. J. Mackie is now almost completed. Jt will make quite an improvement to our rising township. Local business men report having had a busy Christmas.
Hay-making is now in full swing. The weather up to Friday had been very favorable, but on that morning we had a torrential downpour, which effectually put oil* haymaking operations for the day. The shower, however, was purely local, as our neighbors at Waitui were enabled to continue their 'hay-making operations uninterrupted. The mill is resuming operations on Monday next, after the holiday vacation. The contractor for the bridge over the Manganui at the Bristol road intends commencing work almost immediately. As Mr. R. Davies, our local saddler, was about to leave Inglcwood for here on Friday morning, his horse took fright and cleared out. The trap was capsized and considerably damaged. Fortunately, however, Mr. Davies was not in the trap at the time.
Mr. J. Wellington met with a serious accident whilst working in Mr. Leech's pit on Thursday. A fall of gravel came down on him, with the result that his collar-bone was broken, as was also a small bone in the leg. It was also feared that he was injured internally. He was removed to his home, and medically attended to, and is now progressing favorably.
