FIRES.
HOUSE DESTROYED IN FILLIS STREET. A four-roomed, house situated in Fillis street, and occupied by Mr. R. J. Shiel as a bachelor's establishment, was totally destroyed by fire yesterday morni'ng. The outbreak was discovered about a quarter past eleven o'clock. The brigade turned out smartly, but it was found that the lire had too strong a hold, so the brigade's efforts were .devoted to saving the adjoining building, and in this they were successful. Mr. Shiel was at the picnic on the beach at the time, and the origin of the fire is a mystery, as no fire had been lighted in tiie place since the morning before. Mr. Shiel lost his kit of carpenter's tools and other property valued at about-£7O, but has an insurance policy over some of it for £SO. He left about nine o'clock, leaving one of the windows up about a foot, and is quite at a loss to account for the lire unless it was caused by children. It is a coincidence that on the night previous to the picnic at East End a fire was discovered in one of the rooms when some bedding was burnt, but the outbreak was subdued. Mr. J. Riley, Wanganui, owned the building burned down yesterday, and had it covered by a small insurance.
