THE CHURCHES
BAPTIST CHURCH. In common with the Christian chijrches everywhere, this Church had special services on the 25th. The Rev. 1 John Laird was the preacher both morning and evening, and gave sermons suited to the! day. The morning text was in Luke, from which he showed that the axe Jesus Christ came to lay at the root ofy every tree bringing forth evil fruit was already at woriv; but that there were still many evil things, such as covetousness, drunkenness, selfishness and other forms of unrighteousness that the coming of Jesus Christ and his power among men would ultimately remove. The choir ably supported the preacher by the way in which they led the singing of the Christmas hymns, both morning and evening. The anthem in the morning was "How Beautiful upon the Mountains." and portions of the hymns were very well rendered in quartette, the whole congregation being particularly invited to join in the remainder. In the evening the anthem was, "Xight on the Silent Mountains," and the text in John 11-28: "The Master is here and calleth there." ■ Xo decoration of the church was attempt- | ed, but the spirit and tone of the services I amply emphasised the festival and its] I lessons.
