A FREEZING WORKS FATALITY. By Tetagmjib.—tress Association. . Ashburton, Last Night. The adjourned inquest concerning the death of Walter Edward Jones, who was killed through falling down a chute at the Fairfield Freezing Works on Friday last, was held to-day. The evidence of the foreman of the works and ol several workmen was taken, and the inquiry was further adjourned to January 13th, when medical evidence will be taken. * The Guardian publishes a rumor that the widow of the deceased intends to proceed aginst the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company for £2OO compensation. SUPPOSED DROWNING. Reefton, Monday. Heavy rain on Christmas Day caused the rivers to flood. Two men, James Billett and William Whittaker, the latter a Tasmanian, went to the former's farm across the Inangahua in a boat. While returning this filled and went down. Billett could not swim, but stuck to the boat and was washed down on to a sandpit, staying there all night. Whittaker, who was a good swimmer, was last seen swimming up stream. It is supposed he was drowned. CARRIER'S SKULL 1 FRACTURED. Wellington, Tuesday. While driving an express in the city on Saturday afternoon, Alfred Baker, a, carrier, 36 years of age, residing in Mulgrave street, fell from his vehicle and sustained a fracture, of the skull. Baker was admitted to the hospital, and was progressing favorably yesterday, having recovered consciousness during the afternoon. MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED. Ashburton, Wednesday. > The injuries to George Smith, who, whilst motor,-cycling, collided with a train yesterday, proved fatal, death ensuing at ten o'clock last night. Deceased, who was aged twenty-nine, was. a member of the firm of Smith and Sons, sawmillers, and leaves a widow and child. PEA-RIFLE FATALITY, Te Kuiti, Wednesday. Joseph Lind, aged 32, a farm laborer employed at Tokirima, Ohura, was found in a dying condition outside his whare on Monday night with a discharged pearifle lying beside him. He had a small wound over the heart, and died shortly after being found. A BOY DROWNED. Wanganui, Wednesday. A lad named Arthur Littlejohn was drowned in the river about six miles from town while bathing yesterday with a companion. The body has not yet, been recovered. BURNED TO DEATH. • Dargaville, Last Night. At the inquest on the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Davies,. farmers, who were burned to death at Naumai, the evidence showed that Mr. Davies and two companions had been drinking on Monday, and at night when he retired he was intoxicated. It is surmised that the lamp must have been left burning, and capsized, igniting' the bed clothes. A verdict was returned that the deceased were burned to death, but there was- no evidence to show how the fire originated. ? SUICIDE BY SHOOTING. Auckland, Last Night. The police received information last ■night that a laborer named Joseph Brown committed suicide at Tokirima on Monday by shooting himself. FELL FROM MOVING TRAIN. Palmerston North, Last Night. Samuel McLeod was seriously injured this evening at the railway station when attempting to board a train in motion. He fell between the carriage and the platform, and sustained a.compound fracture of the right leg,. a crushed chest, and three broken ribs, fee at present lies at the Palmerston Hospital. Ronald Sarten, the eight years old son of Mr. 8. Sarten, Huirangi, met with a serious accident on Wednesday a>fternoon of last week. The little chap was thrown from his pony, and sustained serious internal injuries, necessitating his removal to the New Plymouth Hospital. He is in a very low state, but a slight improvement' is noticeable.
