At one time the whole of the stockyards were threatened. Falling walls overwhelmed firemen and employee*. Twentyfour firemen and a clerk were killed and fifty firemen and employees injured. An explosion of the ammonia pipes injured other firemen. Mayor Busse had a narrow escape of death. The water supply was inadequate. The fire broke out .again at midnight, and is spreading. Additional firemen have bi-en ordered out. The chief of the fire brigade, the assistant "chief, and all their lieutenants were "killed. There were pathetic scenes at the undertaker's, where the bodies, which were unrecognisable, were put in-coffins.
