(By "Moturoa.") The Manawatu Racing Club's summer meeting opens at Awapuni to-day. Good fields are carded, and Mr. H. Skipwitli will manipulate the barrier. Interesting racing may be expected, and prob-J ably punters will be better able to sort! out winners for New Year gatherings after to-day's racing. Everything points to, the Taranaki Christmas meeting being a record success. The course and lawns are in good trim, and horses may be expected to arrive in good numbers to-day and tomorrow. Local horses are well forward, but New Plymouth does not appear to hold a strong hand this season, so most of the stakes will probably go down the line.
The following Manawatu Cup horses and their riders will be : —lranui (W. Ryan), Sandstream (A. Olliver), Mendip (W. Price), and Merrivonia (W. Young). Trainer Keeper arrived at Palmerston North yesterday with Ina, Merry Lawn, and Negative, who are engaged at the forthcoming meeting.
Provocation struck himself whilst galloping the other morning, and in consequence the pen was put through his name for Palmerston and Auckland engagements. Mr. Bidwill's luck seems to be right out at present. , •Big Blast and Madam Madcap will carry Clifford's "chequers" at Awapuni, and, as Cutts has the pair in good fettle, they should take some beating. The Manawatu Cup has drawn a dozen final acceptors, and should 'provide an interesting race. Rauparaha is as wellbacked as anything, but there should be a lot of money for Sandstream this afternoon when Olliver is hoisted into the saddle. Tiptoe and Highden will be amongst the runners, but the Taranaki pair would probably be better fancied over a shorter course, i STRATFORD ACCEPTANCES AND GENERAL ENTRIES. A final reminder is given to horseowners and trainers that acceptances and general entries for the Stratford annual race meeting close to-night at 9 p.m. The telegraph office closes at 8 p.m., but Telephone No.- 80 is open until midnight. 'A good response on the part of owners is merited, as the weights appear to have been very equitably framed.
