The weather lately has been rather a change from what we had a few weeks ago, but the rain has done a great deal of good to the grass and the crops. _ The early plums (Wright's Early) are ripe in a local garden, but very few can be got, as the birds are eating them as they commence to ripen. The pohutukawa (the New Zealand Christmas tree) is out in bloom. This is rather early, for it is seldom open before Christmas in this district.

Hearing a great deal about the large eels that have been caught in other parts, according to the newspapers, I may as well say. a little about the big eels that live in the river of this district. The other day a Maori caught a monster in the Warea river, which turned the scale at 421bs, and it being rather large for him to eat himself, he sent it to Parihafca, where ho doubt the whole ■village would join in the feast. The school children's concert was held b the school on Thursday of last week, and the building was crowded to the doors in spite of the wet night. The Jsall was beautifully decorated for the. occasion by the children and their teachers. The concert programme was rather a long one, and the parts were all very well taken by the children. It was a credit to.Mrs, Barak and Miss Andrews, the teachers, who had taken so much trouble in teaching the children. The first item on the programme was the overture-, then followed a recitation by Miss Maudie Jones; song, Mr. C. Addenbrooke; hoop .drill, children; song, "Little Boy called Tops"; recitatidn, "Freddie and the Cherries," children; song, "Pansy Faces," children; song, Mr. W. J.
