The population of all the States at the end of September showed an increase excepting Tasmania, where there was a decrease' of 242 during the quarter. New South Wales gained 5287 and Victoria 13,529. TOTALISATOR IN AUSTRALIA. Adelaide, Decembe 22. The report of the Onkaparinga Racing Club shows that during the past twenty years over £381,000 has been invested on the totalisator. Government has received £4321 from the totalisator stamp tax during the past eight years. THE PRICE OF BEER. Sydney, December 22. 'An agreement has been reached between the mine owners and miners of Broken Hill that there shall be no cessation of work pending a settlement of the men's claims for improved conditions. A RAWSON MEMORIAL. Sydney, December 22. Lord Chelmsford opened the Rawson Institute for Seamen, which has been reconstructed and improved in memory of Sir Harry Rawson, late Governor of New South Wales. THE SEAMEN'S DISPUTE. Melbourne, December 22. The Executive of the Seamen's Union at prolonged secret meetings .discussed, the breakdown of the conference with the owners. The result of the discussion has not transpired. Further meetings will be held to-day. The shipowners are hopeful their offer will be accepted. QUEENSLAND'S PROGRESS. Brisbane, December 22. During the eleven months of the present year 5,254,000 acres of Crown lands have been selected, a considerable increase on the previous year.
