PETER BOWLING. | By Telegraph.—Press Association. Greymouth, Wednesday. Peter Bowling met with a most cordial reception at the Town Hall last night. He gave a vigorous speech on the labor movement at Newcastle. A resolution was passed eulogistic of his efforts in the cause of industrial unionism. POLICE v. SUSPECT. Wellington, Wednesday. A man named Bernard A. Gifford, who had eluded arrest for several days and after whom the police had 'had two exciting chases, was brought before the Police Court to-day charged with theft of a step-ladder belonging to Smith and Smith, and breaking into the residence of J. D. Siev,wright, Wellington Terrace, and stealing therefrom a watch and jewellery of the value of £-29. Accused not guilty, and an application by the police for a remand was granted on bail, accused £1)00 and two sureties of £SO each.
A SUNDAY CONCERT. Oama-ru, Wednesday. In a case in which the town cierk sued Alexander M'Donald, cinematograph proprietor, for breach of the Municipal Corporations Act in that he exhibited a series of pictures depicting incidents in the life of our Saviour on a recent Sunday evening, the magistrate fined M'Donald £1 and costs. Notwithstanding that the council refusad permission, M'Donald exhibited, and advertised: "A Biblical Picture Service. Subject, The Life of Christ. Sacred music; collection." The facts were admitted. Counsel for the defence contended that the council's remedy for breach" of section 306 was to be found in section 309, which provides that the council may cancel or suspend the license of the hall in which a breach is committed.
