SOCIALISTS APPEAL FOE CLEMENCY. By Cable.—-Frew Association.—Copyright. Received 21', 10 p.m. Paris, December 21. An excited debate took place in the Chamber of Deputies, tho Socialists advocating clemency for the dismissed railwaymen. M. Briand, the Premier, announced that he had invited the companies to deal with each case in a spirit of large-minded justice, and they had not dismissed any man because he was a trades iinionist or a striker, but only if he committed violence or sabotage. In the interest of the country he demanded that no clemency should be extended to those defying the molibisation order, and the Government, in the interest of discipline, could not extend a general amnesty to the dismissed strikers. A vote of confidence was carried by 354 to 106.
