AMUSEMENTS.

NELLIE STEWART'S VISIT. All who keep in touch with theatrical matters, even in the merest degree, fnust be well aware of the profound impression that Nellie Stewart's varied work has created throughout the length and breadth of Australasia. She undoubtedly occupies the centre position in the realms of histrionic art—a result in no small measure due to her wonderful and inimitable portraiture of Nell Gwynne in the delightful historical drama. "Sweet Nell of Old Drury, 1 ' which play New Plymouth, residents will have an opportunity of witnessing on Saturday and Monday, December 31, and January 2. Nellie Stewart's impersonation of the Orange Girl, who rose from humble surroundings to eventually become the first favorite of her King and chief ruler of his court, in spite of intrigue and jealousy, has been declared over and over again to be a veritable triumph in art. Her undoubted genius and keen sympathy with the part the role to become att all-abiding memory in the minds of all privileged to witness it. The sudden changes of mood, from irresistible rollicking gaiety to tearful sadness the sparkling wit and clever mimicry interwoven with subtle touches ,of unselfish generosity, are all skilfully portrayed, and capture the hearts of the audience just as effectually as "Sweet Nell" won the somewhat susceptible heart of King Charles the Second—wisely dubbed "The Merry Monarch." The box plan opens at Collier's Music Shop on Saturday, December 24. Residents in outlying districts are requested to forward the admission fee (ss), together with a stamped and addressed envelope, to the box office. j
