STRATFORD DAY BY DAY
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. John Zurcher, who on the evening of. the first day of the Stratford A. and P. Show, amused himself by driving a trap up and down Broadway at a furious speed, regardless of the safety of pedestrians, came before the S.M. Court this morning to answer the charge of being, drunk whilst in charge of a trap and norae. A fine of 20s and costs wasim-' posed. There was a large attendance at the concert and presentation of prizes in connection with the Stratford High School last night. The Mayor presented the prizes. The Midhirst school concert and prizegiviHg was held last night, Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., being in the chair. One feature especially noticeable at the Bayly sports yesterday was (the excellent spirit which prevailed among the boys. They were most impartial in their applause, and no matter from what school a boy came, if he" did something good there were sure to be loud cheers | and applause from all the lads. May] such a spirit always be ishown. The sports also revealed how the drop-kick has gone out of fashion, as there were not more than half-a-dozen boys who had any idea of how to drop-kick properly. It will probably be found next year J that this year's failure of any boy, to get the standard in either the punt or the I drop-kick has had its effect, and the practice at these branches of kicking I will bear fruit. The rain of the past two days has proved that the complaints of the councillors about the condition of the streets and footpaths were only too true. When the road is dry a .hole is not noticed to a great extent, but when it is wet then it's another matter altogether. I understand that the small number of entries from South Taranaki schoolsat the Bayly Scholarship sports has not escaped the notice of the Wanganui Education Board, and that the Board are intimating that they expect to see aa alteration next year.
