MARRIED FATHER'S GROOM

DIVORCE DECREE REFUSED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, December 15. The King's proctor intervened to prevent the issue of the decree of November 6, 1909, divorcing Mrs. Pretty, who married her father's groom in desperation after an assault. The proctor alleges the wife's misconduct with Alfred Halfpenny on the voyage to New Zealand by the steamer Rimutaka in June, 1908. Mrs. Pretty gave evidence that Halfpenny forced himself into her cabin, and that they travelled together to Capetown, where she complained to the captain of the Rimutaka. Halfpenny returned to England to give evidence. He states that they eloped. DECISION RESERVED. London, December 16. In the divorce case the verdict was that Mrs. Pretty was guilty of misconduct with Halfpenny. The Judge reserved his decision as to whether he would exercise his discretionary power to allow a divorce.
