A sensation was caused by the arrest of Count Giesbert Wolffmetternieh, aged 24, and his alleged associates, Captain Newton and Julius Stiimann, international cardshapers, the three winning £IOOO sterling from Bactthus, a German officer, at a London hotel. Wolffmatternich denies complicity, and states that he lost considerably himself.
