Received 16, 10.30 p.m. London, December 15. Mr. Asquith, at Glossop, declared there was not the shadow of foundation for Mr. Balfour's accusation that the Government had kept Home Rule in the background. The statement showed the controversial bankruptcy to which the Tory rhetoricians had been reduced. But for plural voting, the counties would return thirty-four more Liberals. Mr. W. H. Long, at Chipping Norton (Oxfordshire), said that Lord Aberdeen had grievously misused his position of King's representative by descending int© the political arena. It was a grossly improper action, and the Unionists in Ireland were entitled to say that he should no longer be regarded as the King's representative, entitled to their respect and confidence. Mr. Austen Chamberlain, speaking at Brixton, said there weTe great inconveniences and objections connected with submitting the Budget to a referendum. He ■would not make such proposals himself, but when Mr. Balfour made the statement he had accepted it. This election •was the ground chosen by the Unionists for decision on tariff reform, if it had not been side-tracked. Whenever the Unionists came into power, it would be their first work.
