A WIDOW'S'CLAIM.

The Arbitration Court to-day heard a claim by Susan A. Geddes against John Mill and Co., a claim for £SOO compensation in respect to the death of plaintiff's husband, Donald Geddes, who I was killed through falling down the hold of tlie Fifeshire on May 12. Defendants did not admit that the accident arose | out of the employment of Geddes,! though it arose in the course of employ-1 ment. His Honor intimated that writ- j ten judgment would be given. Although the Court thought that plaintiff was entitled to succeed, the question was as to what should be done with the money. Mr. Hanlon said that in addition to the widow there were four children, of whom the eldest was five years, and the youngest six months. The question was held over until judgment was delivered.
THE WANGANUI MISHAP. Wanganui, Last Night. The barquentine Alcxa, which went ashore at the harbor mouth on Monday, was refloated this evening. No damage was done to the vessel, and no cargo had to be jettisoned, but considerate u damage was caused to the south mole.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA. Wanganui, Last Night. February 25th has been fixed as the date for the championship regatta. DUNEDIN'S HOSPITAL SATURDAY. Dunedin, Last Night. The final returns in connection with Hospital Saturday have now been received. The collection totalled lis 4d, as against £llOs 14s 3d last yeaff. ' -
COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Wellington,; Last f Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, George Williams, alias Crawford, alias Wilson, was committed for trial on. a charge of assaulting Bartholomew Mahoney with intent to rob. THE, SOUTHLAND SHOW. Invercar'gill, Last Night. People's Day at the summer show was a brilliant success. The gross takings at the gates show an increase of £2OO over those of last year, and the crowds on the two days have been estimated to aggregate 15,000 people. COAL MINING FATALITY. Westport,.Last Night. 'A trucker, named Gilbert Rutledge, was killed this afternoon in the Kiwi section of the Westport Coal Company's Ironbridge mine. The deceased was apparently struck on the head by the handle of the brake at the jig when he was lowering' a rack of coal trucks, death being instantaneous. He was 21 yeairs of age. . t EDUCATION IN CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Wednesday. North Canterbury Education Board is communicating with the Education Department with the object of seeing what; can be done to relieve schools of the payment of heavy rates for such municipal services as water supply. The board decided- to form a military unit in connection with the training college, and to inform all male students that they would be required to join this unit and resign membership of other corps.
