ELTHAM HOLIDAY CARNIVAL
As with the entries for th.-?. chopping and sawing events, the El'tham Axemen's Association has received very large entries for the cycling events at their carnival on Monday and Tuesday, 2fith and 27th inet. On this occasion, both these days are compulsory holidays, and the Carnival "gpte" should this year easily eclipse the huge total of the past four years. No athletic event in Taranaki has ever attracted an attendance approaching that annually maintained by the Eltliam fixture, and as the management goes on year by year increasing facilities for public comfort and convenience in the conveniently situated Taiimata Park, and at the same time offers inducements by way of valuable prizes sufficiently attractive to draw the most prominent men from the bush in Australia and New Zealand, there is not likely to be any diminution in public patronage so long as there is any wood left to be Chopped. The only regrettable feature in connection with this year's carnival is the most unfortunate illness of the popular and highly esteemed secretary of the Association, Mr. F. E. Hardy, who has been lying seriously ill in the New Plymouth Hospital for some time. No man in New Zealand has done so much as Mr. Hardy to organise axemen's sports under stable government, and everyone sincerely hopes that the genial Fred may at least be well enough to witness the events if he cannot Be well enough to actively take part. Notwithstanding his illness, however, he is still directing the organising of the meeting, and with the loyal management of the committee following closely his instructions, nothing is being overlooked that might tend in the slightest degree to mar the complete success of the Carnival.
