THE RED FUNNEL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Yesterday. The thirty-fifth meeting of the Union Steam Ship Company was held this afternoon, Sir James -Mills, chairman of directors, presiding. A dividend of SP/gd per share for the half year ended September 30 was declared, making a total of Is 7d per share for the year. A bonus of 2%d per share was declared to be paid out of the insurance fees. The retiring directors, Messrs. J. M. Ritchie and A. Lee Smith, were re-elected. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. Wellington, Tuesday. The following entries 'have been received for the New Zealand chess championship tourney commencing at Timaru on December 26: Rev. Fox (Norfolk Island), Grierson and Davi'es (Auckland), J. Mason, W. E. Mason, Barnes and Hicks (Wellington), Dunlop (Otago), A. W. Gyles (Westport), T. Mara and Beck 1 (Timaru).
ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT. Gisborne, Tuesday. Harold Kirby Banks, canvasser for the International Investment Company, Auckland, was before the Police Court to-day charged with having received £22 10s and fraudulently omitting to account for the same. Accused was remanded to appear at Auckland, bail being allowed. NATIVE LAND COURT. Wanganui, Tuesday. For the sitting of the Native Land Court, which opened yesterday, no less • than 500 cases are set down for hearing, chiefly applications for partitions and successions. Judge Rawson has only a week at his disposal, and it is absolutely impossible to get through the work. Natives are present from all parts of the island, and they are greatly perturbed because delay in hearing the cases seems imminent.
