DISTRICT NEWS.

TONGAPORUTU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) We have been having very showery weather here during the past week. Some of the showers were accompanied by very vivid lighning, and at times very close; so close, in fact, that at about 9.30 on Thursday .evening last one of Mr. A. Crawford's coach horses was struck by the lightning. These electric storms, especially at this time of the year, are dangerous. The storm on Thursday was the closest I have ever experienced. The s.s. Pitoitoi (Captain Robinson) arrived here at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and loaded 73 bales and 10 sacks of wool and 10 sacks of fungus. She sailed for Waitara on Sunday afternoon. The school children's picnic was held here on Friday. A better day could not have been made to order, and the little ones enjoyed themselves. In the evening a concert and dance took place, and all enjoyed themselves. Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., arrived here on Friday evening, intending to go on to Rerekapa on Saturday morning, but not feeling well, and the weather becoming unfavorable, he reluctantly abandoned his proposed visit. The potato blight in its worst form has put in its appearance here. On Saturday the Uruti Cricket Club tried conclusions with our team on the Tongaporutu ground and met with defeat. The following were the scores:— Uruti, first innings:—J. Hall, b Bradshaw, 5; D. McKellar, b Bradshaw, 3; H. Lett, b T. Waters, 3; F. Bishop, b Bradshaw, 9; J. Mallet, b 'J. Walsh, 1; P.
