A PERMIT REFUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. The Auckland Racing Club's application for a tote permit for the races on December 26 lias been refused, but granted for the following day. Wellington, Monday.

The Government will not make any bar to holding race meetings on December 26, although the sale of alcoholic liquor on that day is forbidden. It is possible there may be complications over the sale of non-alcoholic refreshments, owing to industrial awards allowing many employees a holiday on the 26th. In such case employers must make their own arrangements with their hands.

Mr. Buddo has allowed racing clubs to alter dates from December 26 and 27 to December 27 and 28.

CHRISTMAS RACING DIFFICULTIES.

Palmerston North, Last Night,

A deputation from the Licensed Victuallers' Association and Manawatu Racing Club waited on Dr. Findlay at the railway station to-day, to ask as to whether they would be prevented from selling liquor at the booths on the race, course on Monday (Xmas Day), and whether, if they could not sell liquor because of it being declared Xmas Day, they could race on that day; also whether, if the law was such, they would abrogate it for that day, in view of the club having sold the rights of its booths before the passing of the Act, and having secured a conditional license from the Magistrate for Monday and Tuesday. The Minister said that while Xmas Day was treated as a Sunday in the Licensing Act, and they could not sell liquor on a Sunday, therefore they could not sell it on the day declared to be Xmas Day. There was no law to prevent race's on that day, therefore they could tace. As to postponing the operation of the law, the law was [ there, and he was there to see the laws pue in force. He had no power to suspend them. He was certainly going to put this law into force.

Regarding the message that the Auckland 'Racing Club has been refused a tote permit for Xmas Day, Manawatu applied some time before the passing of the Act for its permits, and received it, so will be able to race on the Monday and Tuesday.
