First Teat Match
COMMENT ON SATURDAY'S PLAY. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright. Sydney, December 12. Rain fell heavily all night, and there is no sign of cessation. The pitch is' soaked and gives small hope for any cricket to-day.
The Bardsley-Hill partnership on Friday produced 224 runs, establishing a second wicket record for test matches. Cotter's performance ranks with the greatest in test contests. His sudden return to form came as a surprise, because previously this season he had done nothing in note either in club or State contests. Schwarz bowled with great! judgment, and his last three wickets cost only 16 runs. At one stage his record stood at three wickets for 5 runs. It is without parallel in test cricket that only one of seven bowlers should have bowled a maiden over. This was Schwarz, who did not send down an over that was not scored oft' until eighty-seven overs had been bowled and over 100 runs had been scored. The Sydney Morning Herald describes SherwelPs wicket-keeping as dazzling, and Faulkner's and Schwarz's stand in the face of the previous debacle as a highly meritorious performance. Faulkner once again proved his extraordinary consistency. Schwarz's reputation as a bowler was enhanced by ,his performance, but their plucky, clever innings alone saved South Africa from ignominious defeat.
RAIN INTERFERES,
Sydney, December 12. It is raining steadily, and the wicket is soaked, The match is postponed formally till two o'clock. Play is unlikely to-day.
BAD WEATHER CONTINUES,
Received 13, 12.10 a.m.
Sydney, December 1.2. Incessant and heavy rain has fallen since last night, and there are no signs of its ceasing. The prospects of the wicket being playable to-morrow, even if the rain holds up, are very doubtful. The test match is to be played out under any circumstances. Other fixtures might be interfered with if it is postponed.
A GOOD BATTING RECORD. Wanganui, Last Night. Butterworth, a Wanganui Collegiate School master, has made a flue cricket record this season, having an average of 195 for five innings, including two not outs. His highest score was 241, and his lowest 63 not out.
COLLEGE CRICKET. Wanganui, Last Night. The cricket match between Wellington and Wanganui Colleges was begun to-day. Wanganui, with nine wickets to fail, require 210 runs to win.
