Terrible details are to hand of the gale in the Caspian Sea. Many barges, with tugs towing, were driven donvn the Volga towards the sea, and dashed into each other and into the icefloes,,soon becoming mere wrecks, to which the fishermen clung until overcome by cold. Two ice-breakers' and three steamers' crews, showing splendid courage, and working in darkness, rescued a thousand. The steamers continued their 'battle amidst masses of ice on the Volga estuary until access to the imprisoned barges was impossible. One-third of the fishermen perished. The fishing industry is ruined, the depots, boats, and nets being destroyed. Thousands of horses and cattle perished in the floods, and hundreds of dwellings were swept away, the occupants being rescued from the roofs and tree-tops.
