(By "Moturoa.") The Waitara Racing Club's annual hack meeting, which takes place at Lepperton to-day, marks the opening of the racing season so far as Teranaki is concerned, and sportsmen will naturally be on the qui vive to sort out likely horses-, not only for to-day's races, but for the Taranaki and Stratford gatherings, which take plaoe about the end of the months Waitara acceptances are fairly numerous, and racing promises to be well up to the standard of recent years. The tracks at Lepperton are" in go«ifi order, and, given fine wieather, a record crowd should roll up there to-day. Winners at Takapuna and at Feilding claiming engagements at Waitara wilj be required to put up penalties as follows: The Winner of any handicap flat race to carry 101b. extra; for every additional race 61b extra; if handicapped at Bst liOlb or over, to carry only half the above penalties. Patrobus won a race at Feilding, and Red Lupin scored twice at Takapuna. The Woodville J.C. Summer meeting will be concluded this, afternoon, the principal events being the Summer and Railway Handicaps, which should provide interesting finishes. \ Patrobus was brought up to Lepperton last week, and his mission is said to be the Waitara Cup, in which the Stratford horse is not badly treated. In the Welter at Feilding the bay faorse gave Mallet 21b and a sound beating, and it remains to be seen how the pair will shape with 111b between them this afternoon. Midnight Sun, racing at Woodville, is a 2-year-old full-brother to those good horses Noctuiform and Nightfall. Good reports come to hand of the doings of Sir Prize and St. Toney. '"Bronco" Coleman is riding them in their work, and will probably steer them when they go North to catch that Auckland double —perhaps! The hurdler Claremont ran two good races at Feilding, finishing a close third each day.
