NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING CO. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christehureh, Tuesday. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company the directors recommended a dividend of 10s per share and a bonus of 2s 6d per share. The profit and loss account showed a credit of £56,695, compared with £42,722 last year. The dividend' absorbs £29,615 and the bonus £7403, leaving £15,548 to be carried forward. The chairman said the company, expected the delivery next year of a passenger steamer similar to the Rotorua and a cargo steamer 495 ft long. DRUNKENNESS DECREASING. Auckland, Tuesday. At, the Auckland Licensing Committee quarterly meeting, the Sub-Inspector of Police stated that there had been a good deal of drunkenness after the hotels were closed through men purchasing liquor previously and drinking it in the streets. Since the attention of licensees had been drawn to this, arrests for drunkenness had decreased very largely. FRUIT FARM SETTLEMENTS. , Christehureh, Tuesday.' The Hon. T. .Mackenzie passed through Christehureh this morning on Ids way to Dunedin. He spoke hopefully of the success of the small fruit farm settlements at Waerenga in the North Island, where several, farms already partly planted are ready for oc--1 cupation. The Department will advance about £l5O to the selector, and its officers will give advice and supervision. If the scheme is a success it will bring under profitable cultivation a large area of country hitherto regarded as waste.
