THE DAY OF REST

SHOULD SOFT DRINKS BE SOLD? By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 6, 11.50 p.m. Sydney, December C>. A deputation representing religious bodies asked the Chief Secretary to rescind the minute allowing soft drink shops to he open on Sunla-ys, on the ground that it is necessary for every toiler to have one day's rest.

Mr. MacDonnell replied that he could not alter the order. He believed in a day of rest, but, in his opinion, to be thirsty on Sunday was no sin. If the shops were closed, there would b* no place for people to drink except at horse-troughs and public fountains,, which diseased persons might use. It was not desirable" to make the people carry water-bags through the streets. Unless Parliament dealt with the matter, things would remain as they were.
