A Paris cablegram announces the. death of the Duke of Chartres at Chantilly.

Captain Mil ward, R.N.R., fonnerly in command of the Mataura, lost in Magellan Straits, is in Wellington. He is now British Vice-Consul at Puuta Arenas, Chili.

Misses Eva and Hilda Nixon, formerly of New Plymouth, who were in Paris during the recent French railway strike, have just returned from the Continent At present they are motoring with friends through the Midlands, and intend paying another visit to Scotland, returning to London in December. They have booked their return passage by the Gtranto, leaving for New Zealand on January 20, writes a London correspondent.

The Hon. J. D. Ormond, M.L.C., and Mrs. Ormond on Sunday celebrated the fiftieth anniversary .of their wedding day. During Hie day they received *• number ,of visits of congratulation and a great many telegrams from all parts of the Dominion. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ormond are (says the Hawke's Bay Herald) fortunate in enjoying excellent health, and Mr. Ormond has just been showing an energy in his Parliamentary duties which many a younger man might envy. Mr. and Mrs. Ormond have been closely identified with the progress of the district for over half a century.
