CRICKET
SATURDAY COMPETITIONS. The weather was- ideal for cricket on Saturday, when Law and United Service met at the Recreation Grounds, the former winning by 20 run?. Service batted first, and knocked up 147, of which Osborne netted 48, Bowles 42, Napier 18,' Mackay 13, and Mr. Extras 15. Osborne played steadily throughout a fine innings. 26 out of his 48 being made in singles; Bowles, on the other hand, had only 17 singles out of 42, and .hit six f ourers. Elliott and Hill divided the bowling honors, both getting five wickets, the former at a cost of 53 runs, and the latter at a cost of 50. The bowlers had a. bad time at the onset, as the score had reached 122 by the time the third wicket was captured, but the "tail" was fairly long, as the remaining batsmeen put on only 25. Law were about in the same position as their opponents when three wickets were down, the score showing 111. The book makes interesting reading in reference to the succeeding stages of the game, and is worth quoting. Four wickets were down for 13G, five for 140, six for 149, seven for 167, and the three last wickets failed to add a inn. Lash's 72 was a good performance, and included nine 4's, one 3, eight 2's, and 17 singles; he was eventually run out. Greatbach contributed a serviceable 39, of which 24 was made in 4's. Clapham made 19 in seven hits, four being 4's, and Bewley accounted for 15. There was only one extra, which says something for the fielding. Girling bowled three overs at a cost of 14 runs, and secured two wickets. Scores:— UNITED SERVICE.
