The judges at the Brewers' Exhibition report that colonial wines generally are very satisfactory, showing a market improvement in condition compared with previous exhibits. It is evident that growers and merchants understand better the class of wines most suitable to Great Britain. Muscatels are little appreciated here. Sparkling wines show market improvement, but are still unequal to Continental. The judges regret that more shippers were not represented, i especially Victorian and West Australian. COUNT TOLSTOI'S WORKS. St. Petersburg, December 1. Count Tolstoi's family found among 'his papers five unpublished works of great literary value. THE ZIONIST MOVEMENT. Berlin, November 1. The Zionists have purchased a large estate in Galilee for a co-operative agricultural settlement. Numerous workmen's dwellings have been erected in the various Jewish colonies in Palestine. THE SHIP-BUILDING INDUSTRY. London, December 1. In a speech at West Hartlepool, Lord Furness stated that he understood Mr. 'Askwith, of the Board of Trade, was preparing what he believes to be a fair and honorable solution of the ship-yard question. "Either the Employers' Federation must accept the solution," Lord Fumess continued, "or the lock-out shall end. Otherwise the shipbuilding industry must choose between me and the Federation." FLOODS IN FRANCE. Paris, December 1. This is the wiettest Noyember for 200 years. Three thousand workers at Mantes are idle through, floods; many streets in Tours are inundated; 5000 people are surrounded in their dwellings in Augers; several villages in Correze are flooded. TOWN DESTROYED BY FIRE. New York, December 1. Dallas, in Texas, has been swept by fire, and five hundred people rendered ■homeless. The damage is estimated at £60,003. AN ELECTRICAL TRUST. New York, December 1. The Attorney-General, Mr. Wickersham, is to begin a suit to dissolve the merger of the allied electrical interests.
