BOXING TOURNAMENT
SOME CLEAN SPORT.
There was a fair crowd at the Drill' Hall last evening to see the 1 bouts arranged by the New Plymouth AmateurBoxing Asoeiation, and the executive isto be complimented on the excellent display and the general management of the proceedings. For this state of affairs the hon. secretary, Mr. A. L. Chappell. is Worthy of special mention. In last night's performance Mr. J. J. Stagpoole, as referee, was absolutely fair and impartial, and his decisions throughout the evening were received with acclaim. The officials all showed they knew their positions. They were: M.C. and weights and costume steward, Mr. L. B. Webster; medical examination steward and principal usher, Mr. G. Griffiths; official seconds, Messrs. A. J. Bailey and F. Lovegrove; call-steward, Mr. A. Lovegrove; timekeeper, Mr. J. Bennett; ticket-box steward, Mr. H. Evans.
The evening opened with the lightweight novices' competition, W. Whitaker meeting H. Rielly, both local'men, the former gaining the verdict. Then R. Gibbs and C. James, also well-known in New Plymouth, stood up to their work well, Gibbs, being the most experienced of the pair, eventually coming out on top. The final between Whitaker and Gibbs was a very uneven contest, the difference in weight being all in favor of the former, and the referee rightly awarded Whitaker the palm at the conclusion of the first round. The winner deserves a word of praise for his magnanimity in withholding punishment in so one-sided a contest.
The list competition was a set-to between T. Quickenden (Pungarehu) and B. Oakes (New Plymouth), and at the third round, after an unsensational go, Oakes 'gainftl the verdict. The '"star" item of the evening was for the heavy-weight championship of Taranaki between Jack Tuke-Morris (middle-weight champion of Wellington and heavy-weight champion of Manawatu) and G. J. Hawkins, a local man promising great things. The former's* weight was list 4%1b and the latter entered the ring at 12st 41b. The visitor did not look the man his opponent appeared, the latter being in the pink of condition and as brown as a berry iji the skin, compared to the white limbed champion of afar. The first round waa all in Hawkins favor, and he retired to his corner when the gong went amidst hearty applause. Honors were fairly even in the second round, although Hawkins had the best in points, both showing cleverness in avoiding punishment. The third round was willing, and Hawkins was continually getting all over his opponent when he was declared the winner. Both men were heartily applauded for the exhibition.
S. Lovegrove (Xew Plymouth) and .J. L. Power (Okato) are middle-weights, and they had a- special match, which lasted the whole six rounds. Lovegrove won easily on points, but Power stood up smilingly to his punishment. A real "clash" was the meeting of N. Bond (Wanganui) and A. C. Maxwell (New Plymouth), two light-weight boxers that don't waste any time when before the limelight. They were even weights, 9st 6y a lb and Oat 71b respectively. The first round went to the local man after making all the advances, and in the infighting that resulted in the second round Bond went "out." In a minute, however, he had recovered, and shook hands with Maxwell, congratulating him on his victory. Before dispersing, Mr. L. B. Webster announced that the Association intended to hold a championship meeting early in 1911, prpbably in February or March.
