FAREWELLING THE TERRA NOVA
PORT CHALMERS ENTHUSIASTIC. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Dunedin, Last Night. The Terra Nova was towed into port and berthed at Port Chalmers at 8.20 this morning, after a fine weather trip from Lyttelton. Large crowds from Dunedin. and Port Chalmers thronged the pier, but visitors were not permitted to board. The Mayor of Dunedin (Mr. T. Cole), the Mayor' of Port Chalmers (Mr. F. W. Platts), Mr. W. Barclay (chairman of the Otago Harbor Board), Mr.H.W.Widdowson, S.M., and Mr. J.R. Bartholomew, S.M., paid an official visit during the day. The vessel was ready for sea at 5 p.m., but owing to a request by the chairman of the Harbor Board that an opportunity be given for according a send-off, the time of departure was fixed for 2:30 p.m. to-morrow. . Captain and Mrs. Scott, with Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, were the guests of Mr. W. A. Moore, at Momington, and were present at a ball given by Mrs. Edmond in honor of the expedition. The chairman and members of the Harbor Board have invited the chairmen of public bodies and respective mayors to join the Plucky at Port Chalmers. The Plucky will accompany the Terra Nova to sea. It is the intention of the Yacht Club to muster all boats that can attend at Port Chalmers and take part in the send-off.
Lieutenant-Colonel Smyth, officer commanding the Otago district, will accompany the Terra Nova as far a» the heads. _ The Lady Roberts will leave Dunedin about noon, and the officers (in uniform) and their wives will be present, / ' ■ , ; '
