I A SIMPLE LIVING. 5 Wellington, Yesterday. An interesting disclosure of the wayj in which the public are occasionally de-! ceived by, bogus patent preparations was made in the Police Court this afternoon. j A woman named Mina Wells some time . ago visited different parts of the city selling a hair restorer, which she alleged would cure certain defects and produce desirable changes in the color of the hair. Her sales were assisted somewhat by a statement which she made to purchasers that if they allowed their names to be used as buyers of the preparation they would later receive a sum of two guineas. Business was brisk, and the prospects of a successful ran for the restorer Were bright, until one day a portion of the preparation was analysed by a chemist, with the result that it was shown that the restorer was merely whiting, and that the true valu« of a 5s packet was about one-sixth of a * penny. The woman was charged with " false pretences, and was fined £5, with l ' the alternative of imprisonment for one " month. I _______ WRECKAGE FOUND. Wellington, Yesterday. The trawler Nora Niven, which arrived here this morning from the Chatham Islands., brings news that the name board of the ship Garnet Hill f was washed ashore on the Waitangi beach. A PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT. Wellington, Yesterday. Ol'af Aanensen, a Norwegian sailor 8 on the barque Martha Beckham, who 3 has just served two months' imprison- > ment, was to-day ordered to remain in custody till such time as he can be deported from New Zealand. Aanensen suffers from tuberculosis, and is a prohibited immigrant. Counsel for Aanent sen stated that the man's statement j 7 about his ignominious treatment on his f vessel at Westport was exaggerated. 3 The barque has since left New Zealand, after the captain had deposited £IOO with the Customs authorities in connection with the deportation of Aanensen. THE SHEARERS' DISPUTE. r Christchurch, Yesterday. In the shearing shed hands' case bet fore the Arbitration Court, the eml ployers raised the point that the forb malities to the proper placing of the dispute before the Court had not been > observed. Mr. Laraey, for the union, submitted that if a technical informality had occurred, the Court should pro--3 ceed to give award in equity. Decision on the point was reserved. " I ARNST AS AN AXEMAN. Eltham, November 25. The Australian champion axeman, C. Miley, has arrived and gone into training for the forthcoming carnival. Dick Arnst informed MiTey that he intend** nominating for the axemen's cup, being desirous of trying his skill against the champion axemen. Though entries have closed, the nomination would be accepted as a late one. l AN OVERWORKED PROFESSION. Napier, Yesterday. There is a spirit of revolt amongst the nurses of the local hospital 'consequent on the extremely long night duties imposed. It is alleged that the health of several nurses has broken down 1 as the result of the long hours, with the 3 result that one has sent in her resigna--3 tion, and others threaten to follow suit t unless the conditions are improved'. It is 3 stated that in some cases nearly 70 t hours a week are worked. 3 - FIRE BRIGADE DEMONSTRATION. Hokitika, Yesterday. The fire brigade demonstration will commence at Hokitika on Friday, March - 3, the conference sitting on that date, 3 and the competition starting the foli lowing day. These dates were selected t by the New Zealand executive in Auckland. ' ' »> FISH FROM THE CHATHAMS. Wellington, Yesterday. The Nora Niven arrived from the Chathama this morning with between five and six tons of hapuka and cod from the fishing station recently established at Waitangi by John McLean, ol | Wellington. The shipment was the re- \ suit of three days' fishing. Mr. McLean | reports that fish are numerous, and the 1 prospects of the industry excellent. Fishermen at the Chathams are experiencing great trouble with sharks, which attack boats laden with fish. A "FAITHFUL" POSTMAN. Isvercargill, Yesterday. At the Police Court, John Faithful Winter, aged 23, a single man, was committed for trial for theft of two postal notes of £ 1 and 5s from a letter posted at Kaitangata. Accused, who is a letter carrier, admitted that he stole a number of postal notes' in envelopes addressed to Tattersalls', Hobart, and sent them to Hobart in his own name. THE OTAGO SHOW. Dunedin, Yesterday. The Otago A. and P. Society's summer show concluded to-day in perfect weather. As this was People's Day there was a very large attendance, some 10,600 people being present. The Otago Draught Horse Breeders' Challenge Cup for best yearling or two-year-old colt bred and owned by exhibitor (cup to be won twice by same owner, was won by J. Seyles' (Georgetown) Baron Steward. The Otago Draught Breeders' Challenge Cup for fillies (same conditions as in colt class) was won by John Callander's (Allanton) Lady Rowena.
