IN PORTUGUESE POSSESSIONS
A ROYALIST PLOT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Port Darwin, November 25. The steamer Rail, from the Islands, brings news of a serious plot at Dilli, in tlie Island of Timor, arising out of the action of the Republican Governor of Timor and the commander of the local Portuguese gunboat. It is supposed that the reason of the plot was that those officials had Monarchist sympathies and were wilfully delaying the proclamation of the Republic. The plot was discovered and frustrated, but the shock so preyed on the Governor's wife that she died." The Republican Government was proclaimed in Timor and at Dilli with great ceremony.
