WAITARA HORTICULTURAL SHOW

AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. The Waitara Horticultural Society held its annual show in St. John's Hall, AVaitara, yesterday, and it proved most successful. The season has been a very good one, and there was a beautiful display of blooms, roses and sweet peas being in great profusion, the latter occupying one side of the hall. Mr. Henry King had a very attractive exhibit of roses for exhibition osly. During the afternoon there was a good attendance of the general public, over £lO being taken at the door. | The judge for cut blooms was Mr. H. R. Cattley, of New Plymouth. In sweet peas Mr. F. Goodacre was the principal prize-winner, as was Mrs. Salt in roses. Mrs. Ellerm also won several prizes in this section. Messrs Davis and Buttimore were judges in the pot plant section, in which there was a creditable display.

Mesdames Skinner and Armstrong judged the table, decorations and floral work/ Of the former there were eight exhibits, Mrs. Wallach obtaining first and second prizes. In the floral section Mesdaines Nosworthy, Ashton and Jones and Miss Bicheno were the most successful exhibitors.

Considering that it was so early in the season, there was a good exhibit of vegetables, fruit and produce. The potatoes shown were fine samples, and the judge, Mr. Hy. King, had difficulty in discriminating. In fruit, it was hard to separate two entries of lemons, and they were bracketed first. Reference to the book showed they were exhibited by the same man from the same tree. Messrs Tate, Longstaff and F. Loveridge were the most successful exhibitors in these classes.

The judges of jams and preserves (Mesdames H. Lepper and Armstrong) had a task in awarding prizes in this section, the exhibits all being of excellent quality. In the home cookery classes, the judge (Mr. W. Black) was most enthusiastic in his praise of the samples submitted to him. They were, he said, quite equal to any professionally made. One cake, made by Mrs. Frost was quite good enough for a cake. Other winners in this section were Mesdames Purdie, Telfar, McAllum, Ellerm, Eolte and Miss Topliss. The exhibit of fancy work was limited in quantity, but its qualitv was very fine. The judges were Mrs. T. Elliott and Miss Simpson.
