I want every yard mentioned here. If I can get it done in dry weather, i,t will be sufficient. If late in the season I will require another 100 yards as the roads will not stand heavy carting in wet weather. I have curtailed 50 yards from last year's quantity. In my report I will again remind them re crusher site and cleaning up pit and doing six chains formation and gravelling in Wallets." —Granted. WAIPUKU BRIDGE. !
The clerk read the finding of the commission in regard to the control of the Waipuku bridge, which was to the effect that it should be vested in the Stratford County Council. Councillor Carter referred to one or two contradictions in the report, and said that if Taranaki had had a permanent engineer instead of "spasmodic" appointments as at present, they would have still have had the bridge. !
JUNCTION ROAD MAINTENANCE. The Council discussed the finding of the commission in connection with the Junction Road between Tarata ana Inglewood, which was to the effect that the Clifton County Council were not liable for any annual payment towards Its upkeep. Members were of opinion that it was unjust for the Clifton ratepayers who use the road to escape from the cost of its upkeep. The alternative was a toll gate, but the question was, should they penalise their own ratepayers? It was resolved that the Moa riding members be appointed a committee to bring down a report at next meeting on the question of erecting a toll gate.
MOTOR TRAFFIC. Councillor McAllum referred to the fact that some of the motor waggons were running without any rubber on the tyres. This must do considerable damage to the roads, and instructions should be issued to the toll gate keeper. It was a case of urgency. Councillor Tate thought that in the face of the heavy loss the company had recently sustained the matter might be held over till the next meeting. Councillor McAllum said there should be no sentiment in the matter. The company were paying a nominal fee for which they were getting a quid pro quo. If they used and broke up the roads someone had to pay. Councillor Hopson said instructions should be sent to the toll gate keeper to charge according to schedule for iron wheels.
The chairman said the clerk had written the Transport Company, and no doubt the matter would be attended to. At all events they could rely on him to safeguard the Council's interests.
