The attendance at the Canterbury Show on "people's day" totalled 37,000.
A sale of work in aid of the Anglican Church, Manaia, last Wednesday, realised close 011 £1)0. Manaia's population is under 430.
At yesterday's sitting of the House of Representatives the Premier announced that local Bills would be gone on with on Monday morning at 10.30.
The annual report of Abraham and Williams, Limited, shows that their turnover last year was an iucrease of £190,000 over that of the previous year.
Word has been received that £2.1,000 is the purchase price paid by an Australian syndicate for the rights of Mr. Felix Tanner's apparatus for preventing the racing of marine engines. There are 14,000 boxes of butter at the freezing works ready for shipment by the boat on Monday. This represents a fortnight's supply, and is the largest shipment so far this season. It is reported that the rural outlook in Hawke's Bay is anything but encouraging- The country is parched, and many farmers, unable to maintain their stock, have been compelled to dispose of them at losing values. The next meeting of the Taranaki Education Board will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 13 and 14. The Board's offices will close for the Christmas holidays on Saturday, Decemebr 24, and re-open on Monday, January 9.
In the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, before Mr. H. S. Fitzherbert, S.M., Albert Hopkinson admitted the paternity of an illegitimate child, and was ordered to pay 7s 6d per week towards its support as from October 13. The question of costs was deferred for a month. Mr. C. H. Weston appeared for complainant, and Mr. R. Spence for defendant.
Mr. S. W. Moult, of Wellington, arrived at Wanganui on Tuesday night, having broken the motor bicycle record between Wellington and Wanganui by half an hour. The previous best was Mr. Wood's six hours' actual riding time, but Mr. Moult's actual riding time was 5% hours. He had one bad fall near Wanganui, but, except for a few cuts and bruises, was none the worse.
The Opunake Times states thac the ill-fated motor 'bus, which went over the bank last week, killing the driver, is embedded up to the axle in mud, and the top of the coach is knocked about. It is said that the steering gear ana motive power mechanism is not damaged. The place where the coach wnit over is not steep or dangerous, the being good. Many anticipated a" sing the motor toppled over a steep-embank-ment, but an Opunake party was much disappointed at seeing such an insignificant place for a fatal accident to occur.
At the meeting of the Taranakv County Council yesterday morning Cr. McAllum remarked that there was one thing he was going to put his foot down on, and he would like the public to know it. He did not intend to listen to any tales about road foremen, or any other matters in that connection. If any ratepayers had complaints to make, let them put their complaints in black and white for the Council to deal with. He certainly was not going to be a human, gramaphone to receive all sorts of little things to retail out again to the Council. This sentiment evoked a chorus of approval from several councillors.
