ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
DISTRESSING DROWNING CASE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hawera, Monday. A sad drowning fatality occurred here yesterday, when Frank 'Whiting, aged about 40. a carpenter, and his son John, aged (>. were accidentally drowned while bathing in Robertson's lakes. It seems that the father was swimming with the hoy on his back, when he must hav? become exhausted ami sank before he could raise a. cry for help. There were three other bathers about at the 'time, but they did not witness the occurrence. The bojy of the father was recovered at 4 in the afternoon, and that of the boy at 5 o'clock this morning.
A SUDDEN DEATH,
Chvistchnn-h, Lsist Night. The police authorities in Christchurch were informed to-day that Mr. Archibald On 1 , a dairy farmer at Little River, died suddenly yesterday afternoon. It is believed 1 hat heart disease was the cause of death. A LUCKY ESCAPE. A-Oilmrion, Last Night. While two railway employees named Thomas P. Magan and E. Rodgers were working underneath the railway bridge over the Ashburton river this afternoon, the plank on which they were standing broke, and both, fell to' the rough anil shingly river-bed. Magan fractured his right leg, and had to be removed to the hospital, while Rodgers escaped with a severe'shaking. f
